E. Luke Marshall is a lifelong resident of Rome, NY known for most of the 20th Century as the "Copper City" for its close association to copper manufacturing and production. For several years he apprenticed with his father learning the basics of silversmithing, metalwork and producing sterling silver jewelry both in Southwestern and his own original designs.
He crafts turn of the century lighting using traditional methods, tools, and materials. Each item is annealed and formed into shape with successive rounds of hammering. This process is repeated sometimes dozens of times until the desired shape is achieved. The formed copper is then planished to achieve the uniform hammered surface that arts and crafts metalwork is known for.
All items are made from pure 1.10 grade copper. The mica is hand built and finished to emulate the mica used on turn of the century lighting. The sockets used in all table lamps are reproduction "fat boy" sockets and each are patinated a dark brown to give an aged appearance.
Each item is patinated with a dark brown finish and after years of research this method is believed to be the same method used by the Dirk Van Erp studio.
The tools used to form hand wrought copper are so specialized that Luke must design and make his own, a process that is considered to be an art form in itself. This is the quality you come to expect from hand wrought copper lighting. He's discerning with each new project and each piece is beautiful and unique unto itself.
